Few remaining venues in the UK have either the heritage or the true community feel of Leeds' West Indian Centre, located outside of the city in Chapel Town, and sometimes referred to simply as the ‘Windy’, or even ‘The Windian’. Serving the community like any local centre should do by day, come the weekend evening, and the humble West Indian Centre can hold a reputation up there with some of the best parties around, thanks to a friendly, open minded crowd that’s almost guaranteed, even when elbow room is hardly at a premium.
To contemporary dance music fans, the centre might be best associated with the rise of the likes of Ben UFO and the development of cult label Hessle Audio, but the byword has always been ‘dub’, be it of the reggae or steppers variety. Arrive with an open mind (and you might want to get a cab), not to mention a ribcage of steel in preparation for a cast of seriously subby soundsystems.
