‘I will be watching you and if I find that you are trying to corrupt my first born child, I will bring you down, baby. I will bring you down to Chinatown.’
Director: Jay Roach
Cast: Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro
Did you know this franchise-launching mega-hit is a remake of an obscure early ’90s indie flick? And that Jim Carrey was originally attached to star, with Steven Spielberg, of all damn people, directing? A fun what-if, but would that have worked better than what we got? Stiller and De Niro are perfectly calibrated as, respectively, the bumbling yet sympathetic boyfriend and the ex-CIA father intent on putting him through the ringer. A comedy of errors pitched somewhere between the Farrelly brothers and Father of the Bride, it walks right up to the line of overdoing it, without quite stepping over – which can’t be said of the mostly useless sequels.
