Indonesia is a country of many intriguing facets and the largest archipelago in the world with over 18,000 islands spread between the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Here you will find majestic volcanoes, bustling metropolises, rustic countryside, beautiful beaches, hidden islands and a kind of natural beauty not seen anywhere else.
Its biggest island is Sumatra, and this is where the largest lake in Southeast Asia is located. Lake Toba has long been known for its awe-inspiring natural beauty – an enormous crater lake covering over 1,145 sq km, this sheer expanse of water could almost pass off as the ocean! The lake was formed over 70,000 years ago after one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions ever; today it’s a destination that appeals to everyone from families and nature lovers to those looking for adventure, or travellers who just want to chill out and enjoy the cooler temperatures.
5 things to do at Lake Toba
Culture & history
For some of us, discovering the culture and history of a destination is just as interesting as its natural beauty, and Lake Toba boasts a thriving indigenous community called the Batak. Their unique handicraft, art and ceremonies are well worth experiencing. For history buffs, the ancient court of Ambarita and the Batak Museum will appeal.
Drift over to Samosir Island
Located within this vast lake is an island the size of Singapore called Samosir Island. This is where to experience the indigenous Toba Batak culture at its liveliest. Head to the village of Tomok with its vibrant market and delicious local cuisine, rent a bike and cycle through rustic paths against the amazing backdrop of the lake, and immerse yourself in charming Batak traditions.
Hike towards gorgeous views
You don’t have to be super fit to enjoy the great outdoors at Lake Toba as there are plenty of easy walks and hikes, each of which will reward you with unforgettable sweeping vistas. Due to the geographical nature of Lake Toba and Samosir Island, you’ll encounter waterfalls, endless rice fields, calm waters and crisp fresh air.
Lakeside living or homestay fun?
Accommodation is varied around Lake Toba, from lovely lakeside resorts to hotels with gorgeous panoramic views of the lake and surrounds. Or you can opt for quirky and comfortable homestays with a local family who will show you another side of the area from a local perspective.
Kayak adventures
The best (and most fun) way to explore the lake is by kayak. Paddling around the biggest crater lake in the world offers something for both the experienced and novice with trips lasting just a few hours or up to six days. The lush surrounds, clear water, waterfalls and pine-covered hills will make you forget you’re in the tropics!
How to get there
Getting to Lake Toba used to involve a five-hour road journey from Medan, but it’s now incredibly easy to visit with direct flights from KL to Silangit Airport. Both AirAsia and Malindo Air now fly direct to Lake Toba with the latter offering flights from Subang Airport. The best part is that it’s only an hour’s flight, making this well worth at least a weekend getaway.
