UK architect Howard Ashley and Malaysians Hisham Albakri and Baharuddin Kassim decided to break away from traditional dome tops and instead give Masjid Negara a 16-pointed star concrete roof resembling an open umbrella – complemented by a 73-metre-high minaret symbolic of a folded umbrella. Its modern façade was strangely never repeated in the construction of other major mosques here, making Masjid Negara a one-of-a-kind gem.
