Virtual reality is no longer a distant sci-fi fantasy, but one that’s available here and now. Need proof? Head on to The Rift, Southeast Asia’s first and largest Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) adventure park on the third floor of Mid Valley Megamall. Covering a massive 40,000 square feet, the adventure park houses over 21 VR and AR experiences to choose from, taken from over eight countries. They range from family-friendly games to adrenaline-pumping zombie shootouts, and there's even a kids' zone where the younger ones can safely play while the adults wander off into distant worlds.

We checked out some of the major attractions that lie within. For more information and prices, visit therift.com.my.

Key attractions in The Rift

Zero Latency

For the latest and greatest experience of VR gaming, look no further than Zero Latency, a free-roaming VR experience brought in from Melbourne, Australia. Here, groups of up to eight players are free to roam within an open 15 x 10m space that resembles a Hollywood motion capture studio, while immersing themselves in three different games: 'Outbreak', in which you have to shoot your way through a zombie-infested city; 'Space Station Gone Dark', a space shooter where you battle killer robots; and 'Engineerium', a family-friendly puzzle adventure where you must work through a mind-bending alien world to be reunited with your tribe.

Outbreak TrailerThe mission is simple, navigate through the apocalyptic city streets and locate a transport ship. As you work your way through the burning wreckage, all hell breaks loose and your team is met by an onslaught of flesh-hungry Zombies and a crew of ruthless raiders. Race against the clock to restore order before time runs out.

Hado Monster Battle

If you love Japanese RPG games like 'Final Fantasy', 'Hado Monster Battle' is the AR game for you. In this game you and your friends will battle against several monsters like dragons and golems by hurling virtual energy balls. Or, you can square off against each other in the Hado PvP mode, where two teams of three can challenge each other in an AR dodgeball-like game. Expect to break a sweat!

HADO MONSTER BATTLE

Terminator X

Experience the next level of laser tag in 'Terminator X', based off the 'Terminator' movie franchise. Inside the multi-level arena are a number of tight corners and strategic shooting points where teams battle against each other and characters from the series. The blaring noise, flashing lights and smoke-filled environment make it all the more exciting and challenging for both newbies and experienced players.

Hurricane VR

The thrills and spills of a roller coaster ride are recreated in 'Hurricane VR', where you’ll be jolted up, slammed down and flipped about 360 degrees as you fly through a virtual universe. It’s not for the faint-hearted – or those who’ve just had their lunch.

VR Adventure

Strap on your VR gear and find yourself fully immersed in one of two games: 'Minotaur's Maze' or 'Virtual Rabbits'. In Minotaur's Maze, you're tasked with finding your way through a labyrinth to come face to face with the mighty minotaur at the end. Want something less adrenaline pumping? Opt for 'Virtual Rabbits', which sees you going up against a giant robot that's manned by furry rabbits.

Motion Blaster

Strapped into motion-activated seats and armed with blasters, you and your friends are taken on a thrilling 3D ride that has you blasting your way through hordes of enemies. You can choose from two games: 'Los Banditos', which sees you taking on killer robots in a cowboy town; and 'Gigamon', which sees you facing a massive alien invasion in a crowded city centre.

The Rift Junior

Just because most of the VR and AR attractions in The Rift are meant for those seven and above, that doesn’t mean the little ones should miss out on the fun too. The Rift Junior is a safe environment where those aged three and above can play, and includes a host of fun features like slides, ball pits, ball shooters and more.

RaceRoom

Forget those console-based racing games – 'RaceRoom' brings a whole new level of fun to the genre by strapping you in a car racing simulator, where you can race against the clock or friends in accurate digital recreations of race tracks in Imola, Silverstone, Sepang and Nürburgring.
