It’s a little known fact that rugby is actually a very popular sport in Malaysia, with a long tradition of being played in boarding schools and certain local institutions. Clubs are also rising in popularity and the competitive calendar gets busier by the year. There are over 300 clubs and 600 schools who practise and play the sport, governed by the Malaysian Rugby Union. If your kid’s school doesn’t have rugby on the curriculum, the best way to get into the sport is to join a club. This partner club to the Leicester Tigers, an English rugby union club that plays in the English Premiership, has grown in size and popularity over the two years it’s been in operation. There are now almost 500 players comprising kids from the age of four to 18 playing touch and contact rugby. The club regularly participates in 15s, 10s and 7s tournaments locally, and several times annually in the region. Players train regularly and perhaps most importantly learn how to play as a team and gamesmanship.
