After 16 years, the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games returns to KL. Taking place from August 19-30, the biennial sporting event will see 5,000 athletes from across the region competing for 403 gold-medal events across 38 sports, and Team Malaysia will be aiming to top the medal charts – a feat that the country hasn’t achieved since it last played host in 2001.
Lofty as the goal might be, we certainly have the chops to do it: in our arsenal of athletes are Rio Olympic silver medallists Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong, who will lead the women’s diving squad; artistic gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi who bagged two gold medals in the previous Games; and ‘Pocket Rocketman’ Azizulhasni Awang, whose win at the Track Cycling World Championship this year will drive on the cycling team to take all 15 gold medals up for grabs.
We can think of no better way to show your national pride than turning up for the games – after all, entry to most of the sporting events are free for the public, while 19 of the ticketed events (including badminton, aquatics, athletics, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies) only cost RM10 or RM20 per person.
