The best milkshakes in KL

The team at CoffeeSociété and Garage 51 has been churning out some messed-up shakes. Go for The Cousin, a medley of chocolate, brownies and Nutella. The rest of the Messed Up Family includes the Father (chocolate and peanut butter), the Mother (green tea), the Son (Nutella), and the Sister (a new dairy-free berry-based shake). There are also seasonal items such as a neon pink Bandung shake, featuring cendol, dates and – we’re not making this up – a curry puff.

This is one milkshake that’ll bring all the boys (and girls) to the yard. The Mint Pistachio Grasshopper is a monstrous concoction, with all essential freakshake elements piled high: a mix of mint chocolate ice cream, milk and whipped cream, a drizzle of dark chocolate sauce, a sprinkle of pistachios, topped with a coco pie. Damn right, it’s better than yours.

There’s nothing like some deep-fried stuff to go with ice cold milkshakes. Mad About Coco serves up a mason jar filled with chocolate milkshake and, to shake things up, a freshly fried Nutella-stuffed doughnut ball (speared on a straw) that sits nicely on the jar. Munch on the Nutella ball (warning: it gets messy) before slurping up the chocolate milkshake. You can also order another Nutella ball for RM5.

Pâtissez, home of dressed-up milkshakes from Canberra, has arrived in Bangsar. There are only four types of freakshakes for now: Muddy Pât (homemade chocolate fudge with torched marshmallows and house-made brownies), Like â Velvet (red velvet cake) and Pretzellâ (it’s a winner: an excellent Nutella shake with pretzels). We hear that cendol and onde-onde freakshakes are in the works.

After dark, everyone’s favourite café in Medan Damansara for brunch and pastries transforms into a bar serving handcrafted cocktails, craft beers topped with onion rings, and more importantly, spiked milkshakes. These boozy brews at Huckleberry After Dark come with add-ons like brandied cherries, banana chip spoons, vodka, Malibu rum and more. Go for the Rocky Road, a concoction of homemade rocky road brownies, toasted marshmallows and bourbon.

The specialities at Olfactory Bulb are coff ee-based cocktails and alcoholic desserts, but you can have everything at one go with the Stout Champ. A mix of Guinness stout, Jameson Irish Whiskey, espresso and cinnamon is topped with vanilla ice cream, making it extra rich and sinful – a shoo-in dessert for after the meal.

At Weiner, hotdogs and dirty (read: spiked) milkshakes rule. You’ll be hard-pressed to choose between Irish Creampie, Bourbon Fudge Shake and the Coconut Rum Fudge, but the latter, spiced up with a dash of Malibu, should be your fi rst port of call. Also, colourful sprinkles always win.

Not to be outdone, Gravy Baby’s berry milkshake ups the ante with alternating layers of vanilla ice cream blended with granola, crushed fresh berries and swirls of whipped cream. The fruits are citrusy enough to bolt you upright but the sweet mini marshmallows and strawberry sauce will keep the tanginess in check.

KGB’s Nutella S’mores eschews the fancy embellishments, leaving just two toasted marshmallows on a skewer as garnish. The flavours, however, aren’t minimalist; every gulp is densely rich – like spooning gooey hazelnut chocolate straight into your system. It’s begging to be shared, but why should you?
