With the addition of Strangers at 47, the street of 17/45 is a whole lot less quiet, though removed enough from the SS2 area to remain blessedly free of the cacophony of choked traffic. That stretch of road has been gaining a fair bit of recognition since cafés like The Humble Pie Co. and The Grind Burger Bar moved in to join Kanna Curry House in luring food addicts. The elevated vantage makes for a charming view at sunset as the row of trees facing the shoplots screens the worst of the glare. During that time, the best seats would be those out on the porch. Knowing us urbanites, however, everyone would just crowd into the air-conditioned café to escape the heat.
The interior design is minimal but cozy, with bare cement walls - but don't expect them to stay blank for long as the trio behind Strangers has got illustrious decor plans ahead - exposed light bulbs and comfortably spaced sandy brown tables and wood-colour plastic chairs.
Once you have settled in, let the food talk. Or crepes, to be exact, because that is the only thing on the menu. Strangers serve up savoury specialities such as Lethal Shrooms (RM19.50), a vegetarian creation of Portobello, shimeji and baby king oyster mushrooms, spinach and caramelised onions. The lightly herbed crepe is folded into a triangle and garnished with a spoonful of tomato relish and a poached egg for you to pierce. Allow the yolk to seep into the crepe before eating. Alternatively, you can order Shore To Please (RM21.50). Tuck into a savoury crepe with cajun tiger prawns, deep fried squid, roasted cherry tomato and salted egg yolk sauce.
For dessert, Adam's Sin (RM11) is a potential crowd pleaser. The sweet crepe has diced cinnamon-infused apple, blueberries and wholemeal crumble, topped with vanilla ice-cream and a drizzle of salted caramel. If you're a fan of peanut butter, Go Bananuts! (RM13) might keep you satisfied with its chocolate peanut spread, caramelised bananas, raspberry coulis and crushed peanuts, wrapped in popiah-like rolls.
Wash down the crepes with a cup of matcha latte (RM10), a concoction by Sing Yi, who makes up a third of the group of business partners. The other two, Sean Ooi and Vincent Lee, handle the crepes, with a little help from Sean's mum, Susan. That's right, all the savoury dishes are created by Sean, while Vincent does the sweet options based on Susan's original recipes. In fact, they make most of the ingredients from scratch - the slather of chocolatey filling in Dark Side? No, it's not Nutella, but a homemade chocolate spread by them.
You might want to keep a close eye on their menu as even though the choices are rather limited now, Sean and Vincent are looking forward to introducing more recipes soon. In the meantime, Spongebob's Crib, anyone?
