RIP, the good ol’ days when stalls used to operate until 4am. Now open till midnight, streetside Bumbung is still a hot spot in Petaling Jaya for nighttime nasi lemak amongst locals, the after-work crowd and students on a budget.
Along with the usual suspects — rice cooked in santan, accompanied with spicy-sweet sambal, cucumber slices, ikan bilis goreng and peanuts — the secret to this well-loved nasi lemak lies in the egg cooked sunny side up (instead of the more traditional hard-boiled method) and the ayam goreng berempah: deep-fried chicken seasoned with curry leaves, cumin, fennel seeds and other Indian spices. Ask for extra kerak on your cheat days, if you dare. The indomee goreng is also worthwhile. Wash it all down with a tall glass of milo ais.
