When it comes to getting kids excited about food that doesn’t involve shiny wrappers or fish-shaped crackers, we say bring on the cute.

The TOM Kids team discovered specialty cafés and businesses creating adorable edible art - it almost seemed a shame to eat them, but eat them we did!

  • Sri Petaling
It's tempting to taste all the colourful macarons here; flavours include lychee rose, chocolate mint, dark chocolate, caramel white chocolate and salted egg yolk (the egg is smiling!). Parents needn’t worry about sweetness levels because Tiny Temptress’s macarons contain 30 percent less sugar than the norm. Besides macarons, there is also an array of other scrumptious desserts, such as L’Affection – a symphony of lychee cream, chocolate glaze, strawberry gelee, almond joconde sponge, on a biscuit base – and Bear Necessity, which sees oolong mousse and passion fruit gelee on a biscuit base.

OW:L Espresso
OW:L Espresso
Bingsu, a Korean shaved ice dessert comparable to ais kacang, has long been OW:L Espresso’s house-specialty, but it’s their latest range of cotton candy-topped bingsu that’s turning heads. Available in regular (RM28) or large (RM50), each cloud-like concoction is literally larger than your head and best shared with the whole family. With Oreos for eyes and deep-fried spaghetti as whiskers, this adorable dessert resembled a seal. Tear off and stuff your mouth with strips of cotton candy to get to the bingsu, which is topped with fresh fruit, ice cream and delicious toppings.

Aboong Malaysia
Aboong Malaysia
Ever heard of the Korean carp cakes called bungeoppang? Similar to the taiyaki in Japan, bungeoppang is the Korean variation of the iconic carp-shaped dessert. At Aboong, they put premium frozen yogurt inside the fish's gaping mouth and top it off with chocolate sauce, biscuit crumbs and skewered fruits. With the freedom to choose your own toppings and fillings, this carp-shaped dessert is like a cute empty canvas for you to create whatever exotic concoction takes your fancy.
Coffee On The Table
Coffee On The Table

Coffee On The Table is a cosy café in George Town taking latte art to new heights – literally. The trained baristas whip up stiff peaks of milk foam into eye-catching, three-dimensional designs such as cheery teddy bears, spiky-maned lions, long-eared bunnies and endearing elephants. Manager Steven Sim and his team even go the extra mile by embellishing each customer’s drink with his or her name. Opt for the coffee and dessert combo that pairs a drink (Tiramisu Latte, Rose Latte or Dirty Chai) with a dessert (crème brûlée, cookie cup or home-made biscotti) for RM22. For the kids, the café swaps out coffee beverages for non-caffeinated drinks such as hot chocolate or babycinos.
