In the hilly neighbourhood of Taman Melawati sits Miss Ellie Tea House, an unassuming English teahouse that hosts a pretty patchwork of vintage antiques. The setting alone is that of an Enid Blyton novel, complete with a coat rack, wooden dressers, hard-bound books and ostentatiously old-fashioned lampshades. The space was visualised by the owner’s strikingly lovely mother, Nancy, whose husband’s passing spurred her on to set up a teahouse.
Teas are supplied by The Good Tea Company while tisanes are sourced from various parts of the world. But one doesn’t just stroll into a teahouse without a helping of scones, and happily, the ones at Miss Ellie are spot-on, trumping any of the dense, dry variety served at most hotels across the city. Owner Justin spent years perfecting the scone-making technique, and it shows in the light, airy, not-too-sweet middles. A simple smear of cream and homemade strawberry thyme jam closes the chapter on a perfectly spent afternoon.
