When it comes to staying in the very centre of Kuala Lumpur, the Shangri-La (affectionately referred to as ‘the Shang’ by locals) is simply the best. The stylish, standard rooms impress with their minimalist chic, but families will be more comfortable in the larger executive rooms. Not only do they boast views out over the city’s megastructures, but they also offer access to the Horizon Lounge – a second-floor sanctuary that provides tranquil breakfasts in the mornings, plus afternoon tea and complimentary cocktails in the evenings. The swimming pool area, which is considerably bigger than those at most city centre hotels, has views of KL Tower and is a wonderful spot for relaxation, and there are movie nights, craft sessions and even a maze in the garden to keep little ones amused. The service throughout the hotel is outstanding, including at the Chinese restaurant Shang Palace, which is one of the best eateries in the city.
