Many would argue that the barbershop boom in Kuala Lumpur is credited to Joe Flizzow’s success with Joe’s Barbershop in SS15 Subang Jaya circa the early 10s (the same year he released ‘Havoc’, incidentally, with the infamous bar “Budak Subang Jaya memang ada gaya”, hey?) – at a time when, suddenly, facial hair was the fad du jour and the word ‘hipster’ lost all meaning. Today, there’s a Joe’s Barbershop in any neighbourhood in the Klang Valley, and even in Melaka, Ipoh, and Johor – but at its core, like its founder (or… president?), Joe’s Barbershop is New York hip hop: all black and white floor tiles, exposed brick walls, with The Notorious B.I.G. blaring out of the speakers.
