Update (July 20): DBKL has decided to drop the new parking rate for TTDI. This is due to public outcry, and considering the fact that TTDI is a residential neighbourhood.

If you’re one of the lucky few who managed to snag a public parking spot in the central business district (CBD) today, you’d realise that the parking fee has increased drastically. According to this report by The Star, the whole of KL will be affected, not just the CBD – which covers Bukit Bintang and the KL city centre, Bukit Damansara, Sri Hartamas, Desa Hartamas, Solaris Mont Kiara, TTDI and Bangsar. Other areas will soon follow as the new parking rates will be implemented in stages between now and August 1. Here’s what we know:

1. Parking fees in the CBD saw an increase of 150 percent starting today. It’s no longer a flat rate of 80 sen per hour but a staggered charge: RM2 for the first hour and RM3 for subsequent hours.

2. For zones outside the CBD, the usual 50 sen hourly rate will become RM1 or RM1.50 beginning August 1, depending on the zones.

3. The RM1.50 per hour areas include Sentul, Melati, Brickfields, Cheras Business Centre, Taman Maluri, Taman Shamelin, Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park, Kampung Pandan, Taman Desa and Sri Petaling.

4. The RM1 per hour areas include Segambut, Jinjang, Wangsa Maju, Setiawangsa, Happy Garden, Salak Selatan, Sg Besi, Bandar Tun Razak, Desa Petaling, OUG, Taman Midah and Taman Len Seng.

5. In terms of the parking duration, for now there won’t be a cap of two hours.
