We've prepared the five best experiences to have while exploring the Krakow Christmas Market this holiday season.

1. See the grand opening ceremony

Krakow Christmas Market will officially open on November 24 (running to January 1). Traditionally, the small stage is set up next to the gothic tower of a former city hall from the fifteenth century, and it’s here you can expect an ice rink, the Santa Claus (Święty Mikołaj in Polish lore) embassy for children, and, of course, the main section with numerous food and gift vendors. As for the ceremony itself, the Market typically kicks off with performances from folk bands, the unveiling of the spellbinding ornate nativity scene (called szopka) and the obligatory lighting of the Christmas tree.

2. Taste some delicious Polish dishes

Many come to Christmas markets for the food and Krakow most certainly delivers in this department. Get acquainted with the famous staple of Polish food, pierogi. These stuffed dumplings are superstars in the nation. You can have them in different variations such as ruskie (with soft white cheese and potatoes), meat-filled or sweet (with cherries, plums or berries inside). Also on offer will be kielbasa (grilled sausage), bigos (hunter's stew), żurek (fermented rye soup) and grilled bread with smalec (lard spread). One of the best food moments you’ll have at Krakow Market Square comes from oscypek, a smoked cheese that originates in the Tatra region. Have it grilled in front of you and top it with cranberry jam. Yum.

3. Warm up with a variety of drinks

Grzane wino (mulled wine) reigns supreme at Krakow Christmas Market – you won't be able to escape its cinnamon-meets-star anise aroma and warming allure. Kompot is another local Christmas favourite and is made of stewed fruits that make it feel quintessentially festive. Fancy something else? Flavourful wiśniówka (raspberry liqueur) and hot cider will do the trick. Meanwhile, little ones are sure to enjoy gingerbread tea or a cup of delicious hot chocolate.

4. Indulge in sweet treats

Christmas is synonymous with sweet things. You've got a generous selection of sugary treats sold at Krakow’s festive market, just waiting to be tasted. Poland is known for its gingerbreads (or pierniki) and hosts some of the oldest gingerbread factories in the world. Our tip? Enjoy a small stack with hot tea or coffee for maximum cosy vibes. Roasted chestnuts make the list of must-haves along with naleśniki (crepes) and gofry (waffles with jam or chocolate).

5. Shop souvenirs from local artisans

Apart from the excellent food on offer, the Christmas market in Krakow is a gathering place for talented local artisans showcasing their creations. Really, it’s the ultimate open-air shopping experience to buy yourself a memorable holiday-themed souvenir. Hunt for traditional Polish Christmas decorations, candles, ornaments and gifts: they’re sure to put a smile on the face of anyone receiving them.
