Mad Giant is one of Joburg’s most respected craft beer brands, known for bold flavours and a strong commitment to brewing science. Mad Giant’s beers are all dry-hopped, a technique that enhances aroma and depth. If you’re new to their offerings, start with the Killer Hop (APA) or the crisp and hoppy Guzzler Pilsner. Their seasonal selections rotate regularly, offering something fresh with every visit.

Apart from the beer, Mad Giant's food is also top-notch. Their smoker produces winners like burnt ends, brisket and pulled pork, and the beer doughnuts and bourbon crème brûlée offer an intriguing twist on their menu. With a lively atmosphere, indoor and outdoor seating, and a good location, it's that perfect place where you can spend hours without even realising it.

A legend in South African craft beer, Gilroy's has been operating for decades. Originally founded by Steve Gilroy, the brewery was resuscitated when new owner Hannes Greyling moved it to Paulshof, so the legacy could live on.

The taproom feels like a traditional British pub; live music, a beer garden beneath the trees and a menu of dishes designed to pair well with their award-winning ales. Their Dunkel lager is a highlight, as are their other traditional brews. The food is satisfying and well-made, if a bit on the expensive side.

Gilroy’s strength lies in its warm and welcoming atmosphere. Hannes and his team make visitors feel like part of the family, and the mix of good beer, live music and friendly service makes this a place you’ll want to return to.

Founded in 2012 by Ndumiso Madlala, Soweto Brewing Company is more than a brewery. Situated in one of Johannesburg's most well-known townships, it offers a mix of genuine township character and world-class craft beer.

Their range includes the original Soweto Lager, Apple Ale, Cherry Ale, Orlando Stout and the spicy Gogo's Ginger Beer. The best way to experience their unique flavours is through a beer tasting before ordering your drink of choice.

The Ubuntu Kraal Beer Garden is where things get even more interesting. Customers can braai their own meat in classic shisanyama style, with traditional local sides like pap, chakalaka and dumplings.

Outside seating only, so best to plan weather-wise. When the sun is out there's no better place to indulge with an ice-cold pint.

Brewhogs dates back to 1984, and the brewery system wandered around a few locations before settling in Kyalami. It now produces over 40,000 liters per month.

The location itself is family-friendly and casual, making it an excellent place for laid-back afternoons.

The beer selection ranges over many styles, and the taproom frequently features tasting events.

Their dedication to craftsmanship and quality is evident, not only in the beer but in the personal touches - they once gave a keg for a regular's wake, the sort of heart that makes them stand out.

It's an excellent after-work hangout, especially on festive Friday nights when the atmosphere is electric. The beer is always cold, the staff is welcoming and it's a stop for any craft beer lover.
