Popular Samatya restaurant Meze recently relocated to Karaköy, where it took over the space formerly occupied by Lokanta Maya. The eatery is now a meyhane run by Nuran Hanım and her son Anıl Yorgancılar. The two chose to stick with the simple décor of Lokanta Maya but managed to infuse Nuran with a sense of warmth we’ve come to expect from most traditional meyhanes. Inside, you’ll find a display case lined with inventive mezes, like broad beans flavored with cinnamon, cracked wheat salad with sour cherries, and marinated sea bass served with green apples. Of the warm mezes, our favorite was the octopus tandır, which was both filling and tasty. Those who want to skip the seafood can also try the köfte böreği (savory pastry with meatballs) or thinly sliced liver. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a quiet dinner away from the crowds in Karaköy, be sure to pay Nuran a visit.
