As one of the most characteristic investments of the Marriott group in the city, DeCamondo Galata comprises 95 stylishly designed rooms divided between two historic buildings in the up-and-coming Karakoy region. The House building was once the residence of the Ottoman Empire’s most powerful banker family also known as “the Rothschilds of the East”. Later based in Paris, the family is known to have perished in Auschwitz during WWII. The Bank building, on the other hand, has been converted from a former bank with a European-style facade on Voyvoda Street, which once hosted all the financial institutions of the Ottomans. Two rooftop restaurants with amazing views and a cellar to savour local wines attract clients from outside the hotel as well.
TIME OUT TIP: Do not forget to take a selfie at Camondo Stairs nearby, which was immortalised by the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The iconic stairs were built in 1860 by Abraham Camondo to shorten the distance his kids had to walk from school to home.
