Yes, Istanbul has islands too! The Princes' Islands (Adalar), a group of nine, are steeped in history, having once served as a retreat for monks and a place of exile for Byzantine royalty. Today, they attract tourists and locals alike, offering an escape from the sweltering summer heat with a refreshing dip in the Marmara Sea at one of their many beaches, followed by a leisurely meal at a seaside fish restaurant. A delightful 1 to 1.5-hour ferry ride will whisk you away to the islands, with stops at the four largest—Kınalıada, Burgazada, Heybeliada, and Büyükada.

With growing demand, Büyükada, the largest of the islands has seen a surge in hotels, big and small, most of which are tucked away in charming wooden mansions overlooking the sea and the distant city skyline.

Finding a hotel in Istanbul run by the same family for six generations is a rarity indeed, and Splendid Palace stands proudly as one of them. Since its inauguration in 1908, it has been the epitome of elegance in Büyükada, playing host to luminaries, celebrities and even European royalty. Designated as a national monument by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the hotel's distinctive charm comes from its eclectic architecture, with a white wooden façade decorated with striking red shutters and a light colonial-style courtyard backed by columns, leading guests to 60 rooms and 9 suites. Make sure to visit the hotel boutique, where you'll find a carefully curated collection of merchandise created in partnership with some of Türkiye's most acclaimed designers. From luxurious silk Rumisu scarves to stunning Tanti jewellery, these one-of-a-kind pieces bring an authentic touch of Istanbul to your trip.

This is as luxurious as it gets in the islands of Istanbul. Funded by major local and international hospitality moguls, this project has dramatically transformed the historic Seferoğlu Grove through a long and much-debated process. The once fire-ravaged mansion at the heart of the estate has been restored to its former glory. Despite its status as a protected national heritage site, several new structures have been added to the estate, including over a dozen Ottoman and Victorian-era-inspired villas and a sleek, multi-story hotel block. The entire styling of the estate is the work of renowned local designer Zeynep Fadıllıoğlu, who is celebrated for her ability to blend Ottoman-era fantasies with contemporary flair.

Dating back to 1895, this hotel is one of Büyükada's oldest, originally known as Hotel des Etrangers. If you compare old postcards of the island, you'll see that the coastline has changed over time, with a promenade now where the shoreline once was, leaving this coastal grand dame slightly inland. After a major renovation in 1988, the Hotel Princess reopened with 25 rooms that are simple yet comfortable. Opt for one with a sea view if you want to witness the weekend influx of visitors.

In a stunning cove on Büyükada with views of Sedef Island, this spot is famous for its seafood and grilled dishes served right on piers by the sea. But it also boasts eight beautifully decorated rooms. The hotel, which does not accommodate guests under 12, has rooms that stand out with their stone walls and nautical-themed décor in blue and white tones. Each room is named after a different sailor's knot. Our favorite? The Camadan room, thanks to its seaside location, huge windows that frame the view, and a private veranda.
