After spending decades hiding under a municipal building, the Theodosius Cistern was opened to the public in early 2018 and joins the Cistern of Philoxenos and the iconic Basilica Cistern among the ancient relics of the Byzantine Empire's water system that visitors can explore firsthand. Dating back to the 5th century, the Theodosius Cistern, also known as the Şerefiye Sarnıcı, is situated in the heart of the old city.
