Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM) hosts the works of renowned German painter, printmaker, and sculptor Georg Baselitz in its new art season. The exhibition, titled Georg Baselitz: The Last Decade, features nearly 100 large-scale paintings and sculptures created by the artist in recent years. It is displayed throughout SSM’s gallery spaces and garden.
The works showcase Baselitz’s distinctive motifs and unique style, which have become more pronounced over the years. Developing a unique artistic approach as a response to World War II, Baselitz has had a significant influence on German art since the second half of the 20th century. Since 1969, he has painted his compositions upside down, a technique aimed at stripping form of its content and positioning his work between abstraction and figuration.
The exhibition is curated by Sir Norman Rosenthal, a leading expert on the artist's oeuvre. Alongside the SSM exhibition, a comprehensive selection of Baselitz’s prints is simultaneously on display at Akbank Sanat.
The exhibition is on view at Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum from September 13 to February 2.
