Amir H. Fallah draws his identitiy, on display at Tel Aviv's Gordon Gallery
Amir H. Fallah, an American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, focuses on the search of identity and the possibility of belonging in his paintings. As a son to parents who immigrated from Iran to the United States following the revolution in Iran in 1978, growing up within the Iranian family and culture coupled with the expectation and need to adopt and assimilate into American culture led to his artistic movement between cultures and a permanent state of limbo.
In his new exhibition "A Hybrid Heart" at the Gordon Gallery, which is a continuation of his previous exhibit from 2017, he presents portraits filled with details of families and subjects that are "stuck" between two worlds. The focus of the paintings is the many objects that surround the characters and carry with them meanings and insights about their nature and identity.
In all of the works, the faces of the characters - women, men or children, are invisible, covered, wrapped in a kind of an eternal burka. They become an inseparable part of the abundance of textiles, fashionable clothes combined with traditional fabrics, and various accessories such as ties, watches, gloves, bags and jewelry. In all of these, Fallah weaves plants and geometrical and ornamental patterns and creates a picturesque array of overflowing details, flooded with restless and disturbing beauty.
