The Dead Sea, or Yam Ha-Melah (the "Sea of Salt") as it is known in Hebrew, is a phenomena distinct to Israel. It is the lowest point on earth, at 304 meters below sea level, with a salt concentration so high that fish and plant life cannot survive in its waters. This is where the Dead Sea takes its name, from the fact that nothing lives in it. Surrounded by all the beauty of the Negev Desert, the mountains of Jordan can be seen from its shores, giving it a view not easily matched.

The Dead Sea is known for the fact that people naturally float in its salty waters, creating quite the photo opportunity! This unique feature of the lake (the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea!) makes it a must-visit for all those visiting Israel. Save your plans to swim for the Mediterranean, or for a resort pool, as swimming is not possible in the Dead Sea. It is also surprisingly difficult to stand in its waters, as the salt concentration (more than nine times more salient than regular seas) takes control of your buoyancy.

The first time entering is a magical experience, and its best to just let go and let the water take hold of you. Remember not to shave a few days before your visit, and be warned that any open cuts or sores will teach you the true meaning of “pouring salt in your wound.”

Strolling along its beaches, visitors will see people covering themselves in the mineral-rich mud, trying to benefit from its healing properties. The Dead Sea is known for its ability to help with skin conditions, such as psoriasis, as well as respiratory problems like asthma, arthritis, and other ailments. In and around the area, visitors will find many spas that utilize the therapeutic natural resources. Treatments including facials and mud wraps, and more. The healing qualities of the Dead Sea make it a destination some people visit yearly, often those who have not had success with other treatments. For these reasons, the Dead Sea has become a hot spot for health tourism.

Numerous public beaches are open along the shores of the Dead Sea, so visitors can stop by when they please. Tour companies offer trips to the Dead Sea daily from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Eilat, and other areas, making it simple to enjoy a day at the beach. Some providers also offer trips that include climbing Masada and hiking at Ein Gedi National Park, allowing guests to experience all the best the area has to offer.Of course, there is a wide selection of hotels, including resort-style hotels in the vicinity, for those looking for a full staycation experience.

The Dead Sea is a must-see for all those traveling to Israel for the first time, as well as anyone else who has yet to witness its beauty and magic. A true treasure in the Negev Desert, you won’t regret time spent at this natural marvel.
