Houston’s Asian and Asian American populations have grown rapidly over the years. With that growth came culinary techniques and flavors that have shaped the city’s vibrant culinary scene into what it is today. With so many Asian restaurants in Houston, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. That’s where Marissa Fiala of Houston Hotspots comes in.

Dallas-based Fiala has always loved exploring new places, which led her to build an online community dedicated to sharing food and travel recommendations. That passion eventually brought her to Houston, where she helped grow her then-boyfriend, now husband’s platform, Houston Hotspots. What started as a hobby has now turned into a full-time career.

Now, with over a half million followers, Houston Hotspots shares all of the best places to eat and explore. “Food is deeply tied to culture, connection and storytelling,” Fiala tells Time Out. “It’s more than just eating—it’s about the experiences, the people behind the dishes and the memories created around every meal!”

From Chinese and Vietnamese fare to Korean and Filipino flavors, Houston is brimming with global flavors. Here are Fiala’s top Asian restaurant picks.

  • Bellaire West

Tucked inside an Asian strip-mall, San Dong is “a hidden gem in Chinatown known for its incredible dumplings,” says Fiala. “They’re handmade, flavorful and always a must-order.” If you have room, don’t skip out on the standout beef noodle soup. Fiala says it’s rich, hearty and full of depth.

  • Greater Heights

Texas doesn’t get cold often, but when it does, count on Pho Ben to warm you up. “Their pho is consistently delicious, comforting and tastes like home,” so it’s no surprise that this Vietnamese restaurant has expanded across Houston, explains Fiala. Pho Ben also serves rice and vermicelli dishes, as well as freshly made spring rolls.

For top-tier hand rolls, Fiala turns to Handies Douzo, the latest concept from chefs Daniel Lee and Patrick Pham. “The seafood quality is top-tier, and their menu is simple yet expertly crafted,” she says. Hand rolls come à la carte or in sets of three, four or five, with options like spicy tuna, BGB sake, shiitake and hamachi. Pair them with sake or beer for the full experience.

  • Neartown

The newer kid on the block, Katami is quickly proving itself among sushi lovers. Premium cuts of seafood can be found here, including o-toro, yellowtail and Japanese squid, along with soups, vegetables and rolls. “Expect beautifully crafted dishes, high-end ingredients and an elevated dining experience,” says Fiala.

While Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine take the spotlight, H-Town’s Korean restaurants are not to be overlooked. Itaewon Pocha is a gem serving Korean comfort fare like kimchi jjigae and soy marinated bulgogi. “Their Bossam, Buldak Rabokki and Spicy Sea Snails with thin noodles are perfect for a comforting meal,” says Fiala.

Though Bori’s Korean BBQ lean on the higher end, the quality of meat and overall experience justify the price tag, Fiala tells us. You won’t be disappointed as cuts of meat include some of the finest, from A5 wagyu from Japan and dry-aged steaks to filet mignon and marinated short ribs. Start with appetizers like japchae, sautéed glass noodles, kimchi pancakes and fried chili eggplant before diving into the main event.
