Hiyori 古着屋日和

Hiyori is a two-floored, small, cosy shop hidden above the steps in Travessa dos Santos and primarily stocks Japanese vintage from the 90s to the 00s. Besides that, they also sell Levi’s, army wear, and workwear – all vintage, of course. Some of the Japanese workwear they stock are even embroidered with the names of previous owners, so if you’re lucky you’ll spot one! Towards the back of the shop is a selection of 90s sunnies, vintage accessories, and bags.

Hiyori is owned by a passionate young couple who really know their stuff and are happy to chat and connect with their customers, especially when it comes to the origin stories behind many of the garments they are selling. Overall, this is a great store for those who are interested in getting into vintage fashion.

Thrifting tips from Hiyori: Think about what you already own and find items that fit with your wardrobe.

Price range: MOP 199-3,000

Col Bleu. Union Vintage

Col Bleu, which means ‘Blue Collar’ in French, is owned by a couple passionate about French vintage fashion and patrolled faithfully by a vocal black cat called Vader.

Located just minutes away from St Lazarus' Church, Col Bleu is a highly curated store specialising in French workwear from between the 40s to 70s, but they also sell Japanese vintage, military wear, retro brands and their own designs. In many ways, the store resembles a museum. One of the owners is a collector himself and is incredibly knowledgeable about the origins of his stock. Numerous pieces of workwear on display bear visible signs of wear, tear, and repair, each speaking to the blood, sweat, and tears endured by its former French working class owners from decades past. To the undiscerning eye, these may just be old clothes, but to those who appreciate the history of vintage fashion, this shop offers wearable relics from the working class culture of restoration that prevailed more widely in the past century.

Thrifting tips from Col Bleu: Figure out whether you’re leaning more towards being a collector of vintage or thrifting for style. Of course, you can be both, but determining which of those you are will narrow down the stores you want to go to. If you want to collect vintage clothes, do some research. You can also do this by asking the shop owner where the garment is from and when it was made, but ultimately the most important thing is to just enjoy the process!

Price range: MOP 500-8,000

Vintage Around 阿灣古著

Vintage Around is hard to miss, facing Av. do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida, the busy main road leading up to Tap Seac Square and down towards Rua do Campo, also known as Sneaker Street to the locals. But it’s not just the shop’s prime location that will catch your attention – from the outside, there are racks of secondhand vintage and stylish mannequins beckoning you to enter.

Once inside, you’ll find a delightful chaos of interesting clothes from the 80s to 00s on racks, walls, along the bannister, and hanging from the ceiling. The entire second floor is packed with even more clothes, just waiting to be discovered by their new owners. To help those unsure how to style vintage pieces, the owner curates outfits and offers affordable alteration services that will turn a garment that’s too big or too small into something more uniquely and perfectly yours.

Thrifting tip from Vintage Around: The key ingredient is time. Give yourself time to patiently sift through the racks and you will be rewarded sooner or later.

Price range: MOP 200-300+

Vintage Market Macau 古著市集

One of the first vintage clothing stores in Macau, Vintage Market has been around since 2014. Housed in a former factory on Rua de S. Roque behind yellow antique metal gates, the shop’s past life has been deliberately preserved with nostalgic elements like its grey and orange square floor tiles and rickety stairs.

Vintage Market has an impressive range of clothes spread across its spacious shop floor and a smaller upstairs area. They mainly stock American vintage, along with army wear, 40s Mexican chimayo clothing, Japanese sukajans, cowboy boots, as well as vintage tees and jackets for kids. For accessories, there is a wide selection of retro jewellery from independent designers in Spain, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Thrifting Tip from Vintage Market and Mamaday: Do some research into styles that you are interested in first, whether it be American or Japanese vintage.

Price range: MOP 300-3,000

Mamaday Vintage

Mamaday is the cool little sister of Vintage Market, run by the same owners. The shop has a fast food theme and is centred around the concept of a mother eager to feed her hungry customers. There is a menu on the walls which clearly determines the prices of garments – look out for the ‘hash browns’, they are the cheapest items you can get for just MOP 99. Mamaday caters more to a younger crowd, offering mostly y2k or other trendy vintage and secondhand clothes, as well as accessories from local designers and jewellers. Like Vintage Market, Mamaday also has a selection of vintage clothing for kids, so if you want to start them off young, you know where to go.

Thrifting Tip from Vintage Market and Mamaday: Do some research into styles that you are interested in first, whether it be American or Japanese vintage.

Price range: MOP 99-799

Old Little Things 小舊物

Old Little Things is a small shop on the first floor of Centro Comercial Teatro Capitol, a shopping centre on R. de Pedro Nolasco da Silva that’s also home to a refurbished theatre. Stepping inside feels like entering the owner’s bedroom – or rather, his walk-in closet. Classic punk music plays in the background, his film photography adorns the walls, and vintage Ultraman figurines collected from Japan are proudly displayed on a shelf alongside carefully curated clothes that reflect the owner’s sense of style.

The shop was born out of the owner’s love for Japanese vintage, offering haori (traditional jackets worn over kimonos), jinbei (traditional summer loungewear) for all genders, and patterned mid-length skirts and dresses. There’s also a selection of American vintage, primarily colourful pinstripe shirts from the 80s to 90s, workwear jackets, and reworked flannels – a nod to his love for American and British punk bands and their iconic fashion that define the genre (hence why Nirvana is blasting on the speakers). You’ll also find reworked denim bags such as roomy and very wacky bags made from dungarees. And if you’re a fan of Macanese band Daze on White, you’re in for a treat. The shop owner is a member of the band and stocks their band merch in the shop – but we’ll leave you on a cliffhanger and let you find out for yourself who he is.

Thrifting Tip from Old Little Things: Go visit a variety of vintage shops both locally and abroad to dig for treasures. This will help broaden and figure out your own sense of style. Don’t be afraid to try new styles or ask shop owners how to style clothes that have caught your eye. More often than not, they are happy to chat with you and tell you about the history of the garments.

Price range: MOP 250-1,500
Address: R. de Pedro Nolasco da Silva, 47R First floor Centro Comercial Teatro Capitol, Macau
