If you've already crossed off places like London, Paris, and Rome on your travel list, how about a quick escape to a lesser-known gem? Located in northern Portugal, Porto is a charming city brimming with history, stunning architecture, beautiful skylines, and of course, Port wine. You’ll also find plenty of unique shops and delicious food hidden along its winding streets. Here are some top must-see spots and experiences in the wonderful city of Porto.

Marginal de Gaia

Porto is one of those ancient European cities that oozes history from every cobblestone. The city centre is split by the Douro River, with Ribeira on one side and Vila Nova de Gaia on the other. If you want to bask in the views of Ribeira, make your way to the Marginal de Gaia waterfront. There, you can soak in the sight of colourful houses stacked up the hillside, with the blue skies and white clouds casting stunning reflections on the Douro River – postcard-perfect moment, check. Try hopping on a ferry for some sightseeing along the river and get a different perspective of this beautiful city.

Historic Centre of Oporto

The Historic Centre of Oporto is a treasure trove brimming with historic landmarks and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. Explore places such as the Monastery of Serra do Pilar, Igreja de Santa Clara church, Clérigos Tower, and Palácio da Bolsa, a beautiful Neoclassical 18th-century building. From its grand lobby to the Arabian Room, the luxurious design is a feast for the eyes. We highly recommend joining a guided tour to explore more.

Porto trams

Porto's tram system dates back to the 18th century. These nostalgic old-school trains can take you from the waterfront right into the heart of the city centre, so you can soak up the scenic coastline while slowly climbing up the hills – a must-try experience.

Livraria Lello

Self-confessed bookworms will have a grand ol' time at Livraria Lello. With its iconic red staircase, lofty ceiling, and colourful stained glass (can you also spot the hidden cheeky emoji?), this store is often named the most beautiful bookstore in the world. Founded in 1906 by the Lello brothers, Livraria Lello was the first Portuguese publisher to release translated works of literary giants like Shakespeare.

Designed by Francisco Xavier Esteves, the shop blends Neo-Gothic architecture with Art Deco and Art Nouveau touches, creating a unique atmosphere that you will almost forget that you're inside a bookstore. While you’re there, don’t miss the special anniversary edition of The Little Prince and the exclusive themed room. Be sure to sign up for a guided tour to dive deep into the bookstore’s history.
