Year in review: 2021’s most read stories on Time Out Hong Kong

With the ever changing social distancing restrictions, it’s no surprise that our social distancing guide was the most read story in 2021. Hongkongers kept abreast of what was going on and our easy-to-read guide served as the go-to article in understanding what we can and can’t do in the city. 

Aside from regularly checking what we’re allowed to do in the city, Hongkongers have also been indoors, catching up on some kinky bedroom movies with the help of our list of the 10 sexiest local movies. Ooh, saucy.

We’re sensing a theme here. Not only did Hong Kong’s sexiest films tickle our readers’ interest but a titillating piece on the sexiest Asian films to watch when alone also kept our readers entertained while staying safe at home. 

When the Hong Kong government rolled out vaccinations, not all Hongkongers were keen to jump on the vaccination bandwagon. At least, not at first. This prompted authorities to work with local companies and businesses to help boost the vaccination rate by offering incentives and prizes. For months, right until the final lucky draws were complete, this regularly updated guide was one of the most-read features on Time Out.

The past two years have been challenging for everyone, let alone the city’s restaurant industry. But in 2021, many of Hong Kong’s restaurants and businesses, along with the chefs and staff, did everything they could to push through and came out triumphant. Sadly, we had to say goodbye to some established eateries in the city, but we did welcome some fantastic new venues too, and those that remained, continued to uphold the quality food, passion and energy that Hong Kong is known for. Our regularly updated list of the 50 best restaurants gave recognition to the city’s best eateries and helped our readers navigate the best venues for great meals in the city. 

Though cinemas reopened in 2021, our readers were still nostalgic about the movies they watch at home. From classic Bruce Lee films to Wong Kar-wai’s tales of romance, our roundup of the best Hong Kong movies was one of the top viewed stories in the past year. 

One thing that the pandemic taught us is that health should be a priority and our readers agreed. But keeping up with your wellness goals isn’t always fun, so our readers found that Nintendo Switch games are a great alternative and came to check out which games could replace and support their regular workout.   

Apart from classic movies, our readers were also catching up on the best local TV dramas to watch on screen. From the heart-warming series of A Kindred Spirit to the aviation classic of Triumph in the Skies and more.

While travel wasn’t really a thing in 2021, most of Hong Kong was excited about new openings and when 18 Challenge Karting opened, it became the most popular venue listing on Time Out Hong Kong.
