Songs of Portrait: Nerve x Cheuk Cheung

Transposing Cheuk Cheung's documentary My Next Step, which follows the story of a Kunqu performer skilled in acrobatics and martial arts, Songs of Portrait is an experimental theatre experience that featuring unique interplay between documentary film on-screen and the actors on stage. Exploring identity issues with the help of Kunqu artist Yang Yang, Noh artist Hikaru Uzawa and classical opera singer Olivia Salvadori, this multilingual performance is also scored by local composer, experimental musician and underground DJ Nerve. The production features translations via surtitles as its protagonists navigate and transform a collection of operatic materials from the Chinese, Japanese and Western traditions.
