The Primitive

Unlike sushi and yakiniku, Japanese skewer food has never really taken off here, which is why we're pleased to see this newly opened joint in sleepy Ap Lei Chau packing in a healthy crowd. More than 30 kinds of yakitori, grilled to order, are priced at a reasonable $18-$30. We like their beef tongue, cube steak and asparagus, which remains juicy on the inside while burnt and crisp on the outside. A nice alternative if you can't find seats at Nambantei in Happy Valley. Meal for two: around $250.
