Time Out says

When you think of pubs in Hong Kong, most likely Soho or Tsim Sha Tsui will come to mind. But did you know, what’s reputedly the oldest British-style pub in town is actually out in the New Territories? Boasting a 75-year history, The Better ‘Ole was opened in 1947 by a retired army veteran next to the Kowloon–Canton Railway Station in Fanling, serving up flavours of comfort to homesick soldiers stationed at the camps in nearby Queen’s Hill and Shek Kong.

Aside from the colonial-era memorabilia dotted around the place, The Better ‘Ole is special in that it has been run by the Yuen family since the 60s, with third-generation owner Stuart now in charge. Though the original location has long since been demolished and the restaurant has been operating in its Sheung Shui location since the 80s, some old favourites from the menu have been retained to this day – try their fish and chips or their curries. Dishes that are more currently popular include New Zealand sirloin steaks, borscht soup, and baked escargot.

In 2024, The Better ‘Ole made a return to its roots with a second location in Fanling’s Luen Wo Hui, which isn’t far from their original branch. It’s well worth a trek out to the New Territories to try this historic restaurant.
