Asia’s 50 Best Bars have been announced for 2018. Now in its third year, the list brings good and bad news for Hong Kong establishments. Sadly, our city’s representation on the list continues to diminish – this year just seven local bars made the cut, compared to nine back in 2016 and eight last year. On the plus side, much loved newcomer to Aberdeen Street The Old Man ranked number five, a higher placing than any local bar managed in 2017.

The full list of Hong Kong establishments that made the cut this year includes:

5. The Old Man (new entry)
10. Lobster Bar (last year's ranking, #10)
11. Stockton (last year's ranking, #8)
15. Quinary (last year's ranking, #7)
18. Zuma (last year's ranking, #24)
20. 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana (last year's ranking, #26)
31. The Pontiac (last year's ranking, #16)

Both
The Chinnery (#42 last year) and Dr Fern's Gin Parlour (#48 in 2017) failed to maintain their form and didn't get a mention this year.

The results fairly reflect a year which saw few spectacular openings here in Hong Kong, The Old Man and Bar De Luxe (a criminal absence, in our opinion) aside. We'll keep our fingers crossed that the likes of PDT and other new openings later this year might do enough to boost our city's representation once again in 12 months' time.

And if you want to know our own expert opinion on what the real best bars in Hong Kong are – as judged by our experts who live here all year round – look no further than our guide to the 50 best bars in Hong Kong.
