K-drama Friendly Rivalry has just dropped on Netflix, and if you've been hooked on this gripping mystery thriller like we have, then you're already familiar with Oh Woori's standout performance as the sharp and ambitious Choi Kyung. Fresh off the drama’s success, the 28-year-old actress is already back on screens with the newly premiered supernatural romance Way Back Love.
We caught up with Oh Woori to talk about her experience while filming Friendly Rivalry, her favourite behind-the-scenes moments, and what fans can expect from her latest role.
What made you decide to audition for this role? Was it the script, the original webtoon, or the opportunity to work with certain actors?
At the time of the audition, I didn’t know exactly which project it was for. However, I had read the original webtoon, and I found the character Choi Kyung incredibly captivating.
I was also intrigued by the idea of portraying the intense academic rivalry among high school girls.
How did you prepare for the role of Choi Kyung? Were there any scenes you found especially difficult?
I had to make a lot of changes to my appearance, but more importantly, I focused on expressing Kyung’s sharp and edgy aura. The director told me he wanted her to feel like a small dagger, and I kept that image in mind throughout. One of the most challenging scenes was the class president election – it required a lot of energy and intensity.
Do you have a favorite line or scene from Friendly Rivalry?
I love most of the scenes between Yeri and Kyung. One that stands out is their first day of school together. When Yeri says, “You’re pretending not to see me, but I know you do.” I thought it was such a cute and perfect way to show their dynamic.
Do you see any similarities between yourself and Choi Kyung?
Yes, actually. During my own school years, I was also sensitive and hardworking when it came to pursuing my dreams. So in many ways, Kyung’s character felt familiar and not difficult to relate to.
The drama deals with psychological tension and dark secrets. Was there anyone on set who helped lighten the mood? Any fun bloopers you remember?
Hyeri unnie has such a playful personality and always kept the atmosphere on set bright and cheerful. There was one scene where we’re heading home in Taejoon’s car after a study session, and I forgot my line – so I repeated the same line a few times. Hyeri joked that she thought we were reshooting the line because of a loud sound outside, and thought Woori must be a genius. Thanks to her, the tension lifted and we were able to enjoy filming again.
If you could switch roles with another character for a day, who would it be and why?
I’d love to switch roles with Seulgi. Not only would I like to try playing a character like her, but since her relationship with Jae is completely different from Kyung’s, it would be fun to explore a new kind of dynamic. Also, I think Soobin would do an amazing job playing Choi Kyung!
Do you have any plans to visit Hong Kong soon? What would you want to do first?
I’ve never traveled abroad before, so if I get the chance, I’d really love to visit Hong Kong someday. Anywhere would be exciting, but I especially want to visit Disneyland!
Your latest drama Way Back Love has just premiered. Can you tell us a little about the show and your character?
Way Back Love tells the story of Heewan, a girl who has turned away from the world—until her first love, Ramwoo, reappears as a Grim Reaper. I play Taekyung, Heewan’s best friend from her school days. Taekyung is a laid-back and loyal friend, someone who truly supports Heewan throughout her journey.
What are your upcoming plans? Is there a genre or field you'd like to explore in the future?
Right now, Way Back Love is currently airing, so I hope many people will tune in and support it. As for future challenges, I’d really love to try theater if the opportunity arises. I want to continue exploring different types of roles and growing as an actor.
