McDonald’s has been making a lot of positive buzz recently with special releases such as their strawberry ice cream series. However, the fast food chain has now caught Hongkongers by surprise, as they announced on their Facebook page that the brand’s premium roast coffee and ground coffee will be temporarily unavailable from 6pm onwards on September 4.

Understandably, this initially left many citizens distraught, but the fast food conglomerate has quickly clarified that the temporary coffee suspension is due to upgrades being applied to McDonalds’ outlets across the city, as well as staff training. Starting from September 5, all coffees ordered in set meals will automatically be upgraded free of charge to a small McCafé Americano. Alternatively, customers can enjoy a small McCafé white coffee with their meal for an additional cost of $2, or opt for a latte for an additional $5. To ease the pain of caffeine withdrawals, McDonald’s customers will also be able to purchase small McCafé lattes a la carte for $10 only, from September 5 to 8 during breakfast hours.
