Hong Kong Tramways (HKT) proposed a rise in their fare prices back in February, and now the tram operator has received the green light for their price hike. Starting from May 12, fares will increase by up to 15 percent, depending on passenger type.
The adult fare for passengers aged 12 and above will go up 10 percent from $3 to $3.30. Children will be charged nearly seven percent more, at a new concessionary fare of $1.60. The price hike for the elderly is the highest, increasing just over 15 percent from $1.30 to $1.50. Monthly tram passes, however, will remain at the same price of $260.
Rising operational costs compounded with customer patronage that has yet to rebound back to pre-pandemic levels meant HKT had to increase their fares to maintain stable operations. The last time they enacted a price hike was in 2022, when adult fares went from $2.60 to the current price of $3.
Thankfully, even after fares do increase in May, the tram remains our city’s most affordable mode of transport. Having trundled along the northern coast of Hong Kong Island since 1904, they are also our oldest public transport system, with charming double-decker vehicles that are an iconic emblem of Hong Kong – and well worth the extra 30 cents per trip to keep them alive.
