Earlier this week, local cab-hailing platform HKTaxi announced via a notice on its app that it will cease operations on April 1. The platform also urged customers to use Uber instead, which is HKTaxi’s parent company.

All HKTaxi accounts are in the process of gradually being suspended, but the platform is incentivising the switch by giving new sign-ups to Uber $100 off for the first five Uber trips, and UberCash reward equivalent to unused Taxi Dollars on their HKTaxi account.

Founded in 2013, HKTaxi was one of the first taxi-hailing apps in Hong Kong and was widely used in the city, with more than 70,000 registered taxi drivers. It was eventually acquired by Uber in 2021, which allowed Uber to launch a ride option for metered taxis in 2023.

By fully integrating HKTaxi with Uber, Uber users can now utilise in-app features such as meter taxi rides, a cash payment option, and request additional discounts from drivers. Of course, Uber’s existing safety features, such as GPS tracking and two-way ratings, are also more advanced.

Should you be looking for other ride-hailing services outside the monopoly of Uber, the Fly Taxi app is still available for ordering Hong Kong’s metered taxis. There is also the new zero-commission ride platform Tada which has recently launched in town.
