If you love the cultural aspects of West Kowloon but not so much the crowds, here’s some good news. The East Kowloon Cultural District might soon be open to provide even more public space dedicated to arts and creativity.
In a video address for an IT and arts development summit on Tuesday, August 15, Chief Executive John Lee announced the city’s plans to integrate Web 3.0 technology into the development of arts and culture. These plans include upgrading performing arts venues, with the East Kowloon Cultural Centre slated to open in phases from the end of 2023 to the beginning of 2024.
“The East Kowloon Cultural Centre will be equipped with innovative equipment and special testing grounds designed to drive the growth of arts technology,” said Lee. This new cultural hub will be located in Ngau Tau Kok, near Kowloon Bay MTR Station. Spread across 2.16 hectares (roughly 21,600sq m), there will be performance halls, an auditorium, a theatre, multiple studios and rehearsal rooms, as well as semi-basement areas for plant rooms.
