On the afternoon of March 24, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2020 wrapped up announcing the continent’s top restaurants in a ceremony live-streamed on their multiple online platforms. Since 2013, the annual awards have taken place as buzzy ceremonies held across Asia, from Singapore to Macao. This year the event was originally planned to go ahead in Japan’s Saga Prefecture, but due to concerns surrounding the spread of the COVID-19, the event was changed to be streamed online, in an unprecedented and responsible move by the organisers.

As they say in show business, the show must go on, and it certainly did, as a successful year for Hong Kong's foodie scene. Eight Hong Kong restaurants made the list this year, including Danny Yip's heavily decorated Cantonese eatery The Chairman, which came in at number two up from 11 where it placed last year. Other restaurants to climb the list were the Soho Neo-Parisian bistro Belon – which went up to number four, French institution Vea – which jumped 22 spots to secure 12th place, and Neighborhood – which flew from 37th to 19th spot. Seventh Son, and Lung King Heen also saw their rankings improve.

Other restaurants to make the cut were Richard Ekkebus' Amber and 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana, although both of these stalwarts of our city's food and drink scene went down in the rankings 10 and 20 places respectively. Overall, Hong Kong was among the top-performing cities at this year's awards, which can give us food lovers something to be very proud of!
