The Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware is celebrating its 40th anniversary with two special evening events this weekend. Head over to Hong Kong Park on Saturday, November 23, to see an outdoor immersive light show as well as ‘The Sound of Art’ concert on the museum’s lawn.
By casting projections onto the façade of the two-storey declared monument itself, the ‘Gentle Smoke of Tea’ light show integrates technology, architecture, history, and the art of teaware. See the nearly 180-year-old building illuminated with motifs of poetry, calligraphy, paintings, and seal carvings on teaware in a unique display of what the museum has to offer.
On Sunday, November 24, visitors can enjoy the light show and also view the museum’s exhibits, including their new Rendezvous with Tea exhibition. This features 18 unique teapots spanning from the Ming Dynasty to the 20th century, some of which are very creatively made, shaped like fruits or even Chinese characters. These teapots are also adorned with auspicious patterns such as the Chinese words for blessings and longevity, the mythological Eight Immortals, and auspicious animals like dragons and bats – perfect to celebrate a birthday with.
There will also be an interactive installation named the ‘Garden of Four Seasons’, featuring 12 cups that represent the flowers of each season in colourful enamel. By interacting with the cups in this display, visitors can guide floral deities in growing a lively virtual garden. This two-day celebration is a great chance to explore a Hong Kong museum that we feel is too often overlooked.
