Hong Kong’s newest cinema opens in Yuen Long

After the closure of one of the city’s oldest remaining cinemas, MCL’s JP Cinema in Causeway Bay, in April, we at Time Out were worried about the future of big screen entertainment in Hong Kong, what with the continued rise of internet downloads and streaming.

Saving the day is cinema chain Broadway Circuit, the company behind the likes of Broadway Cinematheque and Palace IFC. The company is opening Hong Kong’s newest cinema this week, in Yuen Long.

Officially named My Cinema in Yoho Mall, the cinema breaks UA Cinemas’ monopoly on iMax screens in the city and has a number of tricks up its sleeve to draw millennials and Gen Y (the M and the Y in “My”, apparently) kids away from their smartphones and monitors. This includes Hong Kong’s “very first self-service soda machine”, a mixologist developing personalised drinks, wine and craft beer offerings, unique popcorn flavours (with toppings), as well as deep-fried shrimps (because who doesn’t love the odour of fried food in a cinema auditorium?) and hash browns for anyone who missed their McDonalds breakfast.

Dubious though some of those selling points sound, its still good news to know companies see a future in cinemas in Hong Kong and that the northwest New Territories gets some love. Special discounts are available during the cinema’s first months of operation, which may even entice Island residents to hop on the West Rail Line. Details are as follows:

1) During the promotional period, customers can use a My Cinema Giftcard, available at the ticket office, to enjoy the following discounts: buying 2D/3D/IMAX movie tickets at student ticket price and 15 percent off snack sets and alcoholic drinks.

2) Happy Hour: buy one get one free. During 4pm-7pm everyday, you can enjoy a BOGOF promotion for each purchase of alcoholic drinks.

3) Ticket stub special offer: If you buy tickets at My Cinema in July, you can keep the ticket stubs and enjoy a special offer in August and September – $15 off on 2D/3D/IMAX regular movie tickets. (Each movie stub can be used in August and September respectively for one-off transaction. You can buy eight movie tickets for each transaction.)

The promotional period for all these deals is from July 21 to September 27 2017.
