Time Out says

This cluster of 29 islands on Sai Kung’s eastern edge is made up of volcanic rock formations – the remnants of an explosion dating back to the Cretaceous period. Made up of North, East and South Ninepin islands (as well as several other smaller land masses), the islands got their name from the hexagonal columns on their outer edges, which were said to remind British sailors of bowling pins. As the islands are uninhabited, there is no public transport but private tours can be arranged to visit them.
