One of the oldest vintage stores in Glasgow and the UK, this cute boutique specialising in twentieth century womenswear occupies a picture-perfect, bay-windowed premises at the top of Otago Street. It looks tiny from the outside, but it’s deceptively Tardis-like within. The basement level, reached via a steep set of stairs by the counter, reveals all kinds of forgotten fashion treasures waiting to be tried on, rediscovered and re-loved.
Expect all from delicate Victorian lace to psychedelic ‘60s shirts and ‘70s flares, tail coats, dramatic cloaks, glamorous evening dresses, quirky jumpers and cardigans and much, much more. The rails are densely hung, but you get a sense that owner Lesley McGowan doesn’t put things on display here reluctantly, with the stylishly attired window mannequins always serving as a reminder of how even the most innocuous looking pre-owned piece can be revitalised with a little flair and imagination. Retro also sells vintage bedding and homewares, while the display cabinets bristle and shimmer with costume jewellery, retro shoes, hats and bags.
Prices can be a bit on the steep side, but there are bargains to be found if you look hard enough. Expect knowledgeable, down-to-earth and helpful customer service, however much or little you spend.
