Relocated in 2014 to a bright, new premises within Glasgow School of Art’s shiny redeveloped Reid Building – adjacent to the historic Mackintosh Building at the top of Garnethill – the GSA Shop is one of the best places in the city to shop for boutique design pieces and gifts, many of them created by students themselves. Every purchase supports the school, which – following the 2014 Mac fire – needs it more than ever.
The shop’s attractively laid-out stock is a riot of colour and shapes against cool, white, geometric shelves. Pieces for the home range from kaleidoscopic clocks by Fun Makes Good to handmade slimline stained glass mirrors replicating original Charles Rennie Mackintosh designs found in studio doors over at the Mac. There’s both contemporary and classic jewellery, and souvenir hunters can pick up Mac mugs, badges, tea towels and much more.
Even students may consider parting with a little of their hard-won loan money on one or two items – a stylish barrel pencil case in a variety of bright colours by GSA grad Laura Spring, or a Mac sketchbook, or a set of GSA-branded recycled pencils.
