This one-time 'fonda' ('restaurant-inn') hasn't had guests or diners for years, and now a sign hangs outside showing that it's the town's tobacconists ('estanc'). In truth, Can Fonstabeu is actually a grocery shop and café, as well as a place selling cigarettes and tobacco. We recommend it as much for the experience of going in as for actually buying anything, because stepping inside is like travelling back in time. In any more urban setting, a wave of gentrification would surely have passed over this 'colmado' that retains a post-war look, where cured sausages and locally produced honey wait to be bought by customers who would never dream that these things could be bought in plastic wrapping or containers. What's more, the estanc in Llorà has a special secret that you'll only discover if you behave and ask, politely, where the bathroom ('lavabo') is. You'll be directed outside via the back of the house and once there, we recommend you walk forward for a few steps then look up. Among the low branches of a fig tree is a wooded garden that's tucked next to a stone wall where water flows. The house completely hides this oasis from the road, secreting this little wild space where you can enjoy a peaceful coffee.
