The wetlands ('aiguamolls') of the Empordà are the most important such marshland in Catalonia after the Delta de l'Ebre. Rice was once grown there, and this practice has gradually been re-introduced; however, the main attraction of the wetlands nowadays is the chance to observe the more than 300 species of birds that pass through en route to Africa. The best time to observe the birds is in the morning and evening, and the periods when there are more species is during the migrations (March-May and August-October), even though it's possible to see interesting specimens throughout the year. In addition, if you're a photography aficionado, the light of the landscape is exceptional for capturing unique moments with your camera.
