The tramuntana wind and the Dalí Museum. These are the two things that many Catalans will think of if you mention the town of Figueres to them. But the capital of the Alt Empordà region has much more than gusts of wind and bendy clocks. You'll also find places such as the Bar de la Cate, a space that opened in 2014 inside the Teatre La Cate, a key local cultural centre. You can enjoy a beer and, if you're a fan of craft beers, try the Rufa, an authentic Empordà product. You should also have a taste of their tapas: 'patates braves' (fried potatoes with spicy sauce), hummus and a selection of cured meats ('embotits') and cheeses from the area. Once you're feeling sated, why not appreciate the live music that they schedule almost every weekend, with a programme that includes myriad genres, such as rock, pop, soul, blues, jazz, indie and folk. And three highlights on their annual agenda are: Christmas, 'Birraval' (a Carnival celebration) and Hullabaloo (a series of concerts).
