Part of this deceptively large building dates to the 18th century and the George itself has been a hotel since 1881 but with new hotel and café-bar competitors along George Street going for an extravagant look in the noughties, even this genteel old stager adopted a boutique look to keep up with the Joneses. It has a good New Town location of course; some upper rooms let you see a panorama of North Edinburgh and the Forth.
