Another week, another trio of fine parties in Edinburgh, this time designed to ensure you get no sleep all weekend. Amidst the guests we welcome to the city this week, look out for some of the finest young talents emerging from Scotland today, including Afro-house duo Auntie Flo, superstar DJ Jackmaster and Glasgow’s rising star Jasper James.
In Deep with High Life – Sneaky Pete’s, Fri Dec 12
Sneaky’s rolling residency returns once more, this time alighting on the afro-house sound of Glasgow-founded club night Highlife, named after the Ghanaian style of music. Guesting here in the headline role will be live production duo Auntie Flo, consisting of Highlife co-founder Brian d’Souza and percussionist Esa Williams. The London-based Williams, formerly a resident at Glasgow’s Sub Club and also a producer under his own name and with Burnt Island Casuals and Prophets of the South, will provide DJ support.
Nightvision with Jackmaster, Heidi and Jasper James – Liquid Room, Sat Dec 13
As this autumn/winter’s first Nightvision series draws to a close across Edinburgh, the Musika half of the partnership at its heart (that’s the one which handles the house and techno bookings) has cooked up a great line-up here. Two-thirds of the guest bill will be from Glasgow, with international DJ superstar and recent Radio 1 Essential Mix compiler Jack ‘Jackmaster’ Revill taking the headline billing, and Jasper James - son of Glasgow’s Sub Club resident Harri, former Essential Mixer himself, and a producer signed to Optimo Trax - also appearing. Sandwiched in between them will be Canadian Radio 1 resident Heidi.
Coalition with Ivan Smagghe – Sneaky Pete’s, Sun Dec 14
Good Sunday nighters are relatively rare in the 'burgh, so this one promises to be well worth taking the Monday off. Presented by Sneaky Pete’s regular Coalition, Ivan Smagghe is a Parisian DJ who first found fame as a DJ in his home city under the name Ivan Rough Trade, because he used to work in the Paris branch of the seminal record store. He would go on to form Black Strobe in 1997 with his friend Arnaud Rebotini, riding the wave of electroclash while creating a more resilient, sleazier sound, until their split in 2006. A friend and contemporary of Glasgow’s Optimo, his sets are similarly scuzzy and steeped in musical knowledge.
