Anywhere that describes itself as ‘Scotland’s premier whisky attraction’ really needs something special to live up to that claim, for the nation isn’t short of such visitor experiences. Yet the Scotch Whisky Experience doesn’t just succeed because of its location – right at the head of the Royal Mile, just alongside Edinburgh Castle – but also the way it capably makes a go of being all things to all people.
The experience itself is based upon taking a tour of the visitor centre, where knowledgeable guides introduce the drink through pieces on blending, tasting, history and heritage, with tastings included depending on which grade of tour is taken. Children are welcome and will be given activities and a glass of Irn-Bru, Scotland’s national soft drink, in place of spirits, while visitors who prefer not to take a tour can visit the shop, the bar (which stocks 350 varieties of Scotch whisky) or the highly regarded Amber Restaurant.
