Dallas-born and raised, Karlie Deitrick has known the city her whole life. Before founding Karlie Does Dallas on Instagram, she worked as a hairdresser and salon manager, but she wanted to share more about her experiences in Dallas. Fast forward to today, she has built a thriving community of over 100,000 followers, showcasing unique experiences in the city.

One of the biggest draws to Dallas—and a major reason Karlie has stayed all these years—is the skyline. “To me, it’s the prettiest skyline in Texas,” she shares. “My mom moved here from a small town in Nebraska, and she always said, ‘The day the Dallas skyline doesn’t take my breath away is the day I’ll move.’ I’ve always agreed with that.”

From world-class museums to auto club restaurants, here are five must-do experiences in Dallas that Karlie thinks everyone should know about.

  • Things to do
  • West End

Dallasites know Reunion Tower well, but if you’re new to the city, visiting is a must. The Geo-Deck brings visitors 470 feet into the air, offering panoramic views of the entire city. You can visit anytime of day, but Karlie recommends going in the morning for brunch. “They have an $80 all-you-can-eat buffet that includes sushi, desserts and a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar, plus one dish from the kitchen,” she says.

  • Art
  • City Center District

If you’re looking to see world-class art on a budget, Karlie recommends checking out the Dallas Museum of Art on the first Sunday of every month. “They feature a wide range of artists from different backgrounds, and every first Sunday at the museum is completely free—including exhibitions that normally cost money,” she explains. The museum boasts a collection of over 24,000 artworks spanning 5,000 years, so there’s plenty to see.

Fine dining experience in the city

Foodies with deep pockets should make it a point to explore Dallas’ fine dining scene, which includes Michelin-starred Tatsu Dallas—the only restaurant in the city to earn a coveted star—along with several other spots that fuse global flavors with a Texas twist. Some of Karlie’s recent favorites include Wicked Butcher, Ginger’s, Carbone Vino, Catch and Nuri Steakhouse

  • LoMac

The Michelin Key-awarded Hôtel Swexan is a feast for the eyes, featuring Japanese landscaping and European design touches. Its dining options are just as impressive, with five restaurants and bars on the property. While Léonie, the Italian rooftop restaurant, is typically exclusive to hotel guests, it opens its doors to the public for afternoon tea every weekend. “The views are unbelievable, the tea and service are amazing and it’s the perfect spot to get dressed up and have a girl’s day,” says Karlie.

  • Stemmons Corridor

Derby is a social club and restaurant concept designed for motorcycle and car enthusiasts. Guests can take a tour to get up close and personal with the vehicles, then head to Derby for Southern comfort food. “It houses some extremely rare cars, and you can eat looking into the garage,” Karlie notes. Garage tours are $15—an affordable price to see everything from 1920s vintage cars to Nissan GT-Rs.
